What’s going on with your tree?

Seven situations, ranked by how fast you need to act. Each one tells you the first thing to do and takes you to the page with the local prices, rules, and the right kind of crew for it.

  1. A tree or large limb is on the house, a car, or a fence

First: Keep everyone out from under it, photograph the damage for your insurer before anything is cut, and get an emergency crew that can set a crane or rig a controlled lift.

  2. A tree or branch is touching or down on a power line

First: Stay well back and keep others away. Lines and the trees on them are a utility call first; a private crew works around them only after the utility has made the area safe.

  3. A tree is leaning, cracked, or has lifted soil at the base

First: Treat it as a hazard, especially before the next storm. Have an experienced climber or arborist assess it this week and get a removal quote in writing.

    Tree removal →
  4. The tree looks dead or dying — bare limbs, fungus, peeling bark

First: Dead oaks and pines shed limbs without warning. Learn the signs, then decide between removal and a pruning plan before it becomes an emergency.

    Dead or dying tree →
  5. You want it gone and need to know what that costs

First: Price depends on height, trunk diameter, access, and whether the trunk gets hauled. See sourced Chattanooga ranges before you collect quotes.

  6. Branches over the roof, the driveway, or a neighbor’s yard

First: Crown cleaning and clearance pruning, done right, keeps the tree. Topping does not — know the difference before you hire.

    Trimming and pruning →
  7. The tree is down; the stump is still there

First: Grinding is usually the cheapest path. Decide how deep you need it ground and whether the chips stay before you compare prices.

Common Questions

Do I need a permit to remove a tree on my property in Chattanooga?

Not for a tree in the yard of a single-family or two-unit home. The Chattanooga Tree Ordinance adopted April 8, 2025 regulates trees on City streets and City property (Sec. 32-312) and exempts single- and two-unit residential parcels from its private-property rules (Sec. 32-316(a)(1)). A permit — $100 to $500 by tier — is required for a tree in the right-of-way strip between sidewalk and curb, for a designated Notable Tree, and on land being developed. Our permit guide quotes the ordinance section by section.

How much does tree removal cost in Chattanooga?

Most standard removals run $400–$1,200 per tree according to national cost guides read in October 2026, with a 60–80 ft oak or pine around $850–$2,000 and emergency work at 2–3 times the normal rate. No Chattanooga company publishes a price list, so our cost guide shows the ranges by height and every add-on so you can judge a quote.

How does matching work, and what does it cost me?

Nothing. You tell us what’s going on with the tree and where you are; we pass that to an independent, local tree company that covers your area, and they contact you to quote the job. We don’t do the work and we’re not a contractor.

Is a tree service required to be licensed in Tennessee?

There is no Tennessee licence specific to tree work. The state contractor licence applies to projects of $25,000 or more (Tenn. Code Ann. § 62-6-102), which almost no residential tree job reaches. Inside Chattanooga, the 2025 ordinance requires tree companies to register with the Urban Forestry Program, hold a City business licence and carry liability insurance (Sec. 32-318). What protects you is the insurance certificate — our verification guide shows how to check it in ten minutes.

A branch is on my power line — who do I call?

Treat the line as live and stay back. If it is EPB’s primary line (the top wire on the pole), EPB prunes and removes trees there — call 423-648-1372. The service line from the pole to your house is yours to deal with, but EPB will lower it at no charge so a tree company can work. Our EPB page explains who handles what.
